Sri Lanka

This island was the gateway to my travels and since first visiting the country in 2008 I have been lucky enough to return over 15 times, the attraction being the most authentic culture and heritage I have ever experienced set to a backdrop of raw, colourful landscapes. Imagine stumbling across deserted beaches where the powerful Indian Ocean crashes onto silky soft sands framed with coconut palms swaying gracefully overhead. Or taking a trip into town and finding yourself wrapped up in a religious parade of acrobatic dancers and magnificent elephants. It is truly a country where life long memories are made. Take inspiration from the inquisitive locals and enjoy a slower pace of life, pausing at sunset to take in the flavours and adventures of the day, living presently and noticing loving kindness all around. I invite you to immerse yourself in island living and experience an unforgettable journey that may also result in a return visit…

The Yoga

Wake up gently and choose to start your day with an energising yoga sequence specifically designed to stimulate and uplift the body mind encouraging you to make the most of your holiday. Classes will be held in the magical open air yoga shala overlooking the lake where the warm ocean breeze tickles your skin, exotic birds sing from the jungle close by and spicy aromas float through the air. Morning classes will close with fresh coconut water to rehydrate and restore balance in the digestive system. Sunset classes will offer a calmer, more nurturing flow practiced either on the beach or by candle light in the lakeside shala. Cool down with an evening session created to sooth tired bodies and rebuild energy levels allowing you to relax completely. Reflect on your practice in paradise as you enjoy a cup of homemade ginger tea after class.

A combination of Quantum Yoga and Yin Yoga classes will be scheduled throughout the retreat which will be made suitable for all abilities by offering variations of each pose. Expect to feel challenged with dynamic movements yet grounded by Georgina’s compassionate and peaceful nature.

Quantum yoga is a method of optimising your personal practice, it uses Ayurveda (the Indian science of life) to diagnose what type of yoga sequence may be most beneficial. Ayurveda assessment tools are used to identify your dominant body mind constitution or dosha and vinyasa flow (breath synchronised movement) is used to transition through dosha regulating sequences.

Yin yoga is a personal favourite and compliments Quantum Yoga perfectly as it aspires to work deeper into the connective tissues of the body, targeting the ligaments, joints, bones and fascia. Strengthen your heart and mind and through a series of long held postures which will also help you to regain flexibility and maintain mobility in later life. This juicy combination of classes will maximise your physical health by balancing strength, endurance and flexibility.

The Spice

of Life

Sri Lankan cuisine is a mix of curried vegetables, sweetly spiced chutneys served with hearty staples. Refuel after a sweaty morning yoga session with a leisurely breakfast of lush tropical fruits, buffalo curd and treacle. Or why not indulge in a stack of coconut pancakes? And if the mention of coconuts has your mouth watering then you may also like to try local flat breads known as coconut rotis topped with coconut and chilli sambol. Continental options such as eggs, toast and jams will also be available to order along with Ceylon tea and coffee. As the day rolls into night prepare to dine under the stars with new friends whilst fireflies dance overhead. You will be treated to a delicious medley of freshly caught fish, a selection of homemade curries, red rice and poppadoms created by our knowledgable and talented chef. This nutritious menu of local flavours will feed the senses and promote a long, healthy life.

The hang out

The Lake House is the chosen venue and as the name suggests it overlooks a stunningly clear lagoon. Described as a boutique hotel the Lake house offers contemporary living infused with traditional Sri Lankan style. Rooms feature open air bathtubs and private terraces yet are priced with the more financially conscious traveller in mind. Located within walking distance of Hikkaduwa; Sri Lanka’s original hippy resort known for its strong surf and beautiful palm fringed beaches and a short tuk tuk ride away from the historic Galle Fort the hotel inspires peace and creativity.

Discover a hidden talent by learning to surf, cooking your newly favourite curry or chatting in Sinhalese; the local language. Or maybe you would prefer to simply pamper yourself with a course of Ayurvedic treatments, an afternoon of shopping or exotic cocktails on the beach. If you fancy venturing further a field, day trips can also be arranged to visit waterfalls, national parks and tea plantations. However, no worries if you just wish to soak up your immediate surroundings, there are plenty of temples to discover and nature to see whilst swimming or paddle boarding, take it from me you won't be bored!
